Why are you on BeYourArt.com?
I'm in a field that relies on collaboration and networking- this is a great site for finding out what's out there!
Short Bio
I don't know when I started my journey as an artist, exactly. I definitely thought I wanted to be a biologist at one point and then I started singing. Music consumed my life- it became an addiction for me. Voice lessons every week, 3-4 choirs at a time...I was absolutely hooked. I don't know when the journey started, but I know when I came to the crossroad.

My math skills were so poor in high school that I ended up in a technical-school- bound program. I wanted to practice music and the school wanted me to learn how to repair refrigerators. At one point I confronted my teacher and told him that I was going to drop out of the program. He told me that I'd never make it in the world if I did. Life as an artist was no life at all.

Now I'm in my last year of grad school for dramaturgy, I have my equity membership candidate card, and I'm getting paid to do my art. I'm getting to do what I love with no strings attached. It's not easy, but it's sure as hell more fulfilling for me then repairing refrigerators.

VCBA #3 Tofu Basil Ricotta

Very easy and very delicious! I use this to stuff pasta shells and make lasagna and it comes out perfect every time!

Ingredients
1 pound firm tofu, pressed
juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tsp olive oil (or 1/4 cup nondairy milk for a creamier consistency)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes
handful fresh basil leaves, torn (ten leaves or so)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp sugar (optional)
dash fresh black pepper

Directions
Wrap tofu in a paper towel and then wrap a clean dish towel around that… Continue

VCBA #2 Deliciously Vegan Spring Rolls

These were super easy! All you do is:

1. buy some spring roll wrappers (you can find them in the asian grocery stores or in the "ethnic" aisles of regular supermarkets.

2. cut up veggies (you could use cabbage, carrots, red pepper, cucumber, avocado, mushrooms, etc.) into matchsticks. Also try using some fresh herbs (cilantro or thai basil work really well and are really cheap at the local asian grocery store).

3. fill up a large bowl with warm water and submerge the wrappers, one at a time,… Continue

VCBA #1 Lasagna Roll-ups

What is a girl to do with the 8 lasagna noodles that are ALWAYS left at the bottom of the box? Make lasagna roll-ups, of course! Here's what I managed to round up in my kitchen:

-8 whole-wheat lasagna noodles
-fresh spinach (since it's local it was only $.78 for 3/4 of a pound!)
-fresh basil (I was prepared to use dried but I happened to find some at a farm stand for cheap)
-fresh oregano (also prepared to use dried but I found some at the same farm stand)
-marinara sauce (I used some of our ho… Continue

Vegan Cooking for the Busy Artist

I have wanted to start a blog on this topic for some time. Basically, I'm an actor/stage manager/dramaturg/ busy busy theatre person and I have to constantly negotiate feeding myself. This seems easier than it actually is. I have these restrictions to work within:

a) At home my husband and I only cook vegan, so no animal products whatsoever.
b) We're pretty poor (hard to believe, right?) so we have to use whatever produce is in season/on sale
c) I only have about 20-30 minutes in the morning to… Continue

Thanx for the welcome. I like your bio, and I think we have too many refrigerator repair people in the world already, anyway.
